There has been a visible shift across the industry with salons seeking more sustainable practices. This is nothing new, but it is now growing at such a rapid pace that some salons are finding it hard to keep up. We’ve been collecting information from all of our salons in order to discover what really drove them to take steps to increase their sustainability and discovered there are three key things inspiring salons to become more sustainable.

1. Seeing the Waste Poured Down the Sink

The biggest force driving salons to become more sustainable is seeing just how much waste gets poured down the sink. Using the bucket method or recycling programs to discover how much waste salons truly produce has pushed salon owners to introduce new practices to achieve greater sustainability.

Not only does seeing the waste accumulate put into perspective how much more they could be doing for the environment, but it is also a stark realization that the salons are losing hundreds of dollars on product that never touches hair! Controlling waste has helped salons become more green while also improving their bottom line. Salons all have different ways of tackling their waste problem, but the most common and effective solution we’ve seen is putting a colormanagement system in place to help track exactly what is dispensed and used in each service, leaving very little room for waste.

2. Keeping up With Their Peers

It’s becoming increasingly difficult to keep up with trends in an industry that’s constantly evolving. Salon owners are constantly trying to keep up with their peers so that they don’t lose business or fall behind.

The best way to keep up with your peers, surprisingly, is to focus on your salon, your data, and your sustainability practices. By focusing on yourself, you get to set the benchmark for all of your peers, rather than the other way around, keeping you ahead of the curve and trends. The best way to do this is to look at the data in your salon and make sure that your business and tools are working for you. Streamlining processes, training your team, and introducing green practices will help keep you ahead of the curve without having to compare yourselves to your competitors.

3. Seeing How Much Clients Are Drawn to Sustainable Salons

Now more than ever, clients are seeking out sustainable salons. Consumers across the globe are turning their sights to sustainable practices, whether it’s the products they use at home, the way they commute, or the salons they choose to frequent. Sustainability is important to everyone, especially the Gen Z crowd. As they’re coming into spending power, it will become even more important for salons to be sustainable.

Green practices not only bring in new clientele, but it makes your current clients more loyal to your salon. It’s been proven that customers of greener products are more loyal than the average product with consumer goods, so why should it be any different to salon clients?
