How to Achieve Waste Warrior Status

Vish reviews the metrics of each salon and stylist to determine the top five salons and top five individual stylists of the year. Using ‘waste cost per service’ as the core metric, Vish identifies who is using the least amount of color to complete services, tracking waste as a percentage of the service as well as the dollar amount of product wasted. Elite Waste Warriors are celebrated for their dedication to their craft and their commitment to promoting sustainability and waste elimination.

People say you need to ‘spend green’ (ie more) to be green but sustainability saves you money. We thought we were good with waste but it was a shock to see how much was left once we started using Vish. Clearly, we’d been over applying. Now we use so much less but still get fantastic results.

It’s amazing to be recognized like this. I made it a habit from the start to reweigh just before taking my client to the basin to have her color rinsed. It’s fixed so I rarely forget. This allows me to see exactly how much color I’ll need for my client’s next visit.

ABOUT CHARLENE LYNCH

@salon730

I learned the hairdressing trade in high school, and have been at it ever since. I’m married with four children and live in Virginia. The industry has been very good to me, and I am so excited that we are now taking recycling seriously in the industry.

Teaming up with a salon waste expert is the easiest first step towards salon sustainability. They will deal with all your trash. We also teamed up with Vish for our color waste. When it was announced I’d won a Vish Waste Warrior Award, it sparked off a huge conversation in the salon about better recycling, which I’ve championed for years

#2 Waste Warrior
The Hair Base Salon Performance Ranking
Average Waste Cost per Service - £0.57

ABOUT THE HAIR BASE SALON

I have had my salon 22 years, I started with £1800 and a pair and a scissors, now I have a salon of 10 people and an Academy, in 2018/19 we went back to the roots on having a brand refresh and refit looking at how we can be more of a community salon with our charity feel by raising over £35k for charities over the years and also being greener and more sustainable.

The salon prides itself on client care and we look at The Hair Base as our work home, giving the relaxed homely feel while professional and sustainable.

Everything we do is first considered from a sustainability angle. Most of our own-brand products are sulphate and paraben-free, and about 80% of our clients who buy them return to our refillery for top-ups rather than buy more plastic. It is amazing that we won a Vish Waste Warrior Award. It’s really great for the team and they deserve it because they do not compromise when it comes to the planet.

#4 Waste Warrior
Asylum Hair and Beauty Performance Ranking
Average Waste Cost per Service - £0.69

ABOUT ASYLUM HAIR AND BEAUTY

I have been hairdressing now for around 18 years dare I say. I started in just a local salon to where I lived learning all of the basics and always had that hunger for more education that the majority of hairdressers have. I then moved to a few different salons until I came to one that worked with Paul Mitchell products. This allowed me to then apply to be part of Paul Mitchell’s global education team to which I got onto after a long factor like application and spent 2 years educating for them. I then went onto working for myself with an aim to open my own salon, which I did in 2018.

I never wanted Asylum to be just your average hair salon. I started with the purpose of being cruelty free, vegan, gender neutral and sustainable with a push towards finding anything I could to help towards a sustainable workplace. We became one of the first salons to become paper free with all of our client records, and using apps for colour and skin testing such as Consult by Timely that syncs with our system, which then lead the way to finding Vish, the perfect system to simultaneously measure our colour and update records while helping us to stop using so much colour, reducing salon costs by a massive amount and saving the amount of chemicals being sent to waste bins or being washed into water supplies.

I ploughed the profit into education, including extension training, which has helped grow our business. Squeezing more profit from colour also means I’ve been able to avoid compromising services or being forced into crazy price rises. After the disaster of COVID and the rising cost of absolutely everything in the salon, Vish has helped us retain and grow our clientele.

Charlotte Ryan - Salon 26
#3 Waste Warrior
Charlotte Ryan Performance Ranking
Average Waste Cost per Service - £0.34

ABOUT CHARLOTTE RYAN

@salon26bromley_br2

I’ve been hairdressing for 20+ years and I’m a London based stylist in our little boutique salon in Bromley. I strive to learn something new all the time and was very excited when we got our Vish system. I’m an all rounder stylist but aspire to one day be a curly/textured hair specialist.

I’m very competitive, so I always want to do better than the time before. Waste Warriors has also enabled me to become more of a role model for our apprentice; after we found out about my win, she came to me and said she wanted to become a waste warrior one day. Each millilitre counts.

Seraphim Williams - Nikki Froud Hairdressing
#4 Waste Warrior
Seraphim Williams Performance Ranking
Average Waste Cost per Service - £0.39

ABOUT SERAPHIM WILLIAMS

@hair-by-seraphim

I started in the industry at fifteen. I have always been very lucky that from the moment I walked into a salon for the first time, I was sure that I was going to become a hairdresser. I work at Nikki Froud’s in Hampshire. Nikki took me in as an apprentice at sixteen and trained me up. I fell in love with the team and we became a really close knit group and I even went to work abroad for a year and still came back for more with an amazing team so it must be something in the water that Nikki gives us! I have worked with Vish now for two years and have worked for Nikki for 5 years.  I have found using Vish a massive help with day to day salon life and has helped me grow as a stylist and also gain a really good understanding of waste as the facts are in front of you. We will often turn Vish into a competition for the month as a team because we are just that competitive.

Understanding how much wasted product there is allowed me to take personal responsibility for product use, as Vish breaks down what I’ve used week by week and I can make improvements or see where I need to improve the following week. Comparing our stats has become a competitive part of the salon as we are all on a mission to bring down product waste.

Becca Mcgough - Alchemy & I

Becca’s passion for hair and creativity drives her desire to constantly level up her art, and there’s nothing more Becca loves than exploring new techniques and bringing them together to create a dream look for her clients.

“Once I had 100% reweigh, I began competing with myself because I didn’t want to get anything lower, so I’ve been striving to maintain that figure. My best advice for others is that all it takes is perseverance and as you use Vish more, the easier it gets. In the end, you’ll find it helps you to be quicker when you do your client’s hair again.
